8 Reasons Why You Should Re-Watch The Last Five Years

I’m obsessed with Richard LaGravenese’s film adaptation of Jason Robert Brown’s musical The Last Five Years. Not only does it feature a great pair of performances courtesy of Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan, but it succeeds in ways that perhaps its own stage productions never could. And it does so by embracing the visual language of film. I’ve already watched the film (and several of its scenes) several times, so here you go, an exhaustive collection of all the “easter eggs” and precious details that add to the tapestry that is the heartbreaking story of Cathy and Jamie:

1. The dress

“Listen up, Schmuel, make one stitch and you’ll see what you get”

L5Y 04

“Will you share your life with me for the next ten minutes?”

2. The photo

L5Y 05

“And then he’ll smile, his eyes light up and deep within the ground”

L5Y 06

“I stole a look at your picture on the inside sleeve”

3. Summer stock theater

L5Y 09

“I play “Anita” at the matinee”

L5Y 08

“I’m never gonna go back to Ohio!”

L5Y 07

“I mean, you made it to Ohio!”

4. “Still Hurting”/”Nobody Needs to Know”

L5Y 10

“Jamie is over and where can I turn?”

L5Y 11

“All that I ask for Is one little corner; one private room at the back of my heart”

5. Cathy’s jewellery

L5Y 15

“And I’m Still Hurting”

L5Y 13

“Na na na na, na na na I give you unlimited time!”

L5Y 14

“…and Mrs. Jamie Wellerstein! That’s me!”

L5Y 12

“We’re fine, we’re fine, we’re fine”

6. Jamie’s girls

L5Y 21

“And in a perfect world”

L5Y 20

“A miracle would happen”

L5Y 17

“And every other girl would fly away”

L5Y 16

“And since I have to be in love with someone”

L5Y 18

“Since I need to be in love with someone”

L5Y 19

“Maybe I could be in love with someone like you…”

7. Hand-holding

"I didn't know you had to go so soon, I thought we had a little time"

“I didn’t know you had to go so soon, I thought we had a little time”

"Can I ask you again, for another ten?"

“Can I ask you again, for another ten?”

8. The beginning is the end…

L5Y 01

“Jamie is over and Jamie is gone”

L5Y 02

“Goodbye, Cathy”

I love that @Last5YearsMovie just encourages you to replay it as soon as it ends; Jamie & Cathy’s story is definitely a Sisyphean endeavor.

“Just close the gate
I’ll stand and wait
Jamie… goodbye”
